Jazz drummer Dustin Kaufman (ME' 12) was been selected as one of the 12 semifinalists for the 25th Annual Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.The competition is widely regarded as the most prestigious of its kind, with the winner receiving a $25,000 music scholarship and a recording contract with the Concord Music Group. Life's a Game
Sara Farber (MA '08) "loves writing puns for four-year-olds." Farber is a toy writer and content developer, meaning that she is responsible for the jokes, songs, and chatter emanating from many of the talking toys in your home. She also develops content for apps, digital books, virtual worlds, and electronic games. After fifteen years in the toy and children's media industry, Sara has started her own company, Galactic Sneeze, which she runs with her husband. They've created the board/party game Schmovie, which challenges players to craft witty titles for outlandish movie premises. Read More on Farber on parents-choice.org >>
Alumnae in Action
Harriet Fields (EdD '81), pictured center, spent a month in Africa and Rwanda after a meeting with a fellow alumna Samantha Basile (MA '11), Founder and Executive Director of The Mama Project. With Basile, Fields was able to hone her expertise in global health care and now plans a return to Rwanda to bring university public health nursing educators to provide service learning and "train the trainer" experiences. While in Rwanda, Fields also met with the Rwanda Cinema Center and their Kwetu Film Institute to screen two of her grandfather's films under the stars. (Her grandfather is comedy icon W.C. Fields!)

2013 CIES International Travel Award
The travel award was established through an endowment from George Soros and the Open Society Institute (OSI) and expanded under CIES president Ratna Ghosh to encourage distinguished researchers and practitioners from developing countries to participate in CIES conferences. Launched at the 2009 CIES conference, the endowment attempts to facilitate the participation of international education experts who serve in countries where international projects are implemented. |
TC Community School celebrates its new home, cheered on by the community and a cast of dignitaries. The public university-assisted PreK-through-8 school run by the New York City Department of Education and formally affiliated with TC, admitted its first class -- a group of kindergarten students -- last year in a temporary facility. The school was designed in collaboration with neighborhood residents and fulfills a pledge made by Columbia University, as a part of the Community Benefits Agreement it signed in undertaking an expansion into the Manhattanville area of Harlem, to create a community school. The school's vision also integrates delivery of services for children and families in order to optimize educational opportunities and achievement.

The Power of Giving: A TC Student Shares Her Scholarship Story
Doctoral Student Lisa Pao talks about her reasons for choosing TC and why scholarship support is so crucial. "Getting this scholarship meant that I didn't have to take out another student loan...which is great," she says. Lisa shares her story here.

Overall participation increased by 8%, and membership in our leadership giving society, the John Dewey Circle, grew by 17%. Plan Ahead for Year-End Giving to the Annual Fund
You can help both Teachers College and yourself by making a charitable contribution before December 31. Cash and securities are deductible charitable contributions. If you give a gift of appreciated securities that you have held for longer than one year, you can deduct the full fair market value on your 2012 tax return and avoid capital gains tax.
If you wish to give a gift of appreciated securities or mutual fund shares, contact your investment advisor soon to be sure your gift is completed by December 31. You can also use appreciated securities to establish a charitable gift annuity with Teachers College that will provide you with a fixed income for life, as well as a charitable deduction.

Alumni play an important part in spreading the word about Teachers College. We encourage you to send the Office of Admission the name and email address of anyone you think might be a good 'fit' for TC. They will reach out to each student you provide information for and will be sure that the student receives important information about the application and admission process at TC. They will send a personalized note to each student letting them know that they were referred by a TC alumnus. If you would like to recommend a prospective student, please forward his or her first name, last name, and email address to tcinfo@tc.columbia.edu. Write 'Alumni Referral' in the subject line of the e-mail message.
Alumni Council Nominations Due Dec. 31
Are you interested in serving your fellow TC alumni? There's still time! TC alumni are represented officially by the Alumni Association's Council, a group of 35 members elected to serve three-year terms. If you are interested in becoming a council member or know someone who would be an asset to the council, please complete a nomination form. Deadline to submit nominations is December 31, the selection process will take place during the first quarter of 2013, and appointments will be made in May.

October 5 - Macy Art Gallery Exhibit - Retro: A Close Look at 40 Years of Printmaking at Teachers College
The exhibition chronicles the last 40 years of the printmaking studios - which have a long history here at TC. The studios have been collecting students' work since the 1970s. The exhibition presents a selection of prints from each decade since 1970. The exhibition will be in Macy Gallery through October 26.
