TC's Henry Levin Honored by San Marcos University
Henry Levin, TC's William Heard Kilpatrick Professor of Economics and Education, has received an honorary doctorate from San Marcos University in Peru, the oldest university in the Americas.
Speaking at a ceremony in Lima in September, Elias Mejia, Dean of the university’s Faculty in Education, praised Levin for his “outstanding academic career and firm commitment to quality education” and expressed the desire to become allies with both TC and Columbia in creating better education professionals and encouraging innovative research.
Mejia said the degree also honors Levin for his role in creating and expanding the Accelerated Schools Project, a program that restructures schools’ organizations, curricula and instruction to help students realize their full academic, social and physical potential. Levin developed the program in 1986, and it has since been implemented in more than 1,000 schools around the world.
Levin is Director of the National Center for the Study of Privatization in Education and Co-director of the Center for Cost-Benefit Studies in Education, both based at Teachers College. He also holds honorary degrees from Monmouth College in Illinois and Maastricht University in Holland.
