My name is Gitit, and I am thrilled to announce my new role as Research Associate I at the Laurie M. Tisch Center for Food, Education and Policy.

With a Master's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics and over two years of experience as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) for early childhood centers across underserved communities in NYC, I appreciate the crucial role nutrition plays throughout children’s lives. My hands-on experience working with children and their parents opened my eyes to pressing issues such as food accessibility, the vital role school food programs play, and the importance of nutrition education from a young age.

My path in nutrition also led me to explore research, analyzing the factors influencing the food choices of urban college students. This work not only broadened my understanding of the intricate dynamics shaping dietary behaviors but also fueled my desire to learn more about food assistance programs and health equity. While conducting this research, I also had the privilege of interning at the NYC Food Policy Center, delving into the world of food policy, particularly amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, as your Research Associate, I'm excited to bring my unique blend of practical experience and research insights, focusing specifically on the future of school nutrition programs and supporting those doing the work on the ground. In my work with schools, I've observed a genuine desire to teach nutrition to children, but I've also identified challenges such as a lack of resources, training, and staffing. I believe that with the right support from the Tisch Food Center, educators can feel empowered to teach nutrition and find the passion to inspire the youth they work with.

In addition to school food, my personal interests in nutrition include the influence of food advertising on children and the addictive ultra-processed food industry. My favorite food policy books are “Hooked” by Michael Moss and “Soda Politics” by Marion Nestle. When I’m not reading a food policy book, you can probably find me breaking a sweat at a Zumba class or sharing food and wine with friends.

I look forward to working towards more equitable and accessible food systems for NYC children. Please reach out if there is anything I can do to support you or your organization!
